Hello Reader, One day this spring my husband left for his run at 7:13pm. I know this because I glanced at the kitchen clock when he kissed me goodbye, promising he'd be back in 45 minutes. By 8:00pm, I was fine. Folding laundry, sipping my water. By 8:15pm, I felt that familiar tug in my chest. You know--the one that whispers, Something's wrong. And that's when my mind took off running faster than my husband ever could. What if he collapsed on the trail? What if someone attacked him on a secluded path? What if he's lying in a ditch somewhere and no one can see him? Each thought grabbed the next one, spinning faster and faster until I was mentally planning funeral arrangements and wondering how I'd tell our kids. My heart was pounding. My hands felt shaky. I was completely hijacked by fear in the span of about three minutes. But here's what I've learned through years of walking with Jesus. When when our minds go places they shouldn't go, our hearts need an anchor. And that anchor isn't positive thinking or deep breathing—it's the promises of God. So I did what I've trained myself to do in moments like these. I focused on Scripture. (It helps that this one is hanging on the laundry room wall! :) ) "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9 I read it once. Then again. And then prayed the verse to the Lord. God, I know You are with me. I know you are with my husband. I don't want to link arms with fear; I want to link arms with You. Not because the words are magic, but because they're true. God is with my husband wherever he is. God is with me in this moment of worry. God's presence doesn't depend on my husband being exactly where I think he should be at exactly the time I think he should be there. Twenty-seven minutes later, at 8:47pm, he walked through the door, slightly winded and completely unaware of the mental marathon I'd just run. He'd taken a different route. Fear had tried to write a tragedy. God's Word rewrote the ending. This is why I pray Scripture, Friend. Because when our thoughts spiral, God's promises can stop the spin. Today is release day for my new Praying the Promises of God prayer journal!
